Nelson, New Zealand
Our story began in 1973 with the first planting of Riesling vines (some of the oldest in the South Island) on the original vineyard site in Upper Moutere. To this day, along with nine other growers around the Nelson Region, grapes for our wines are grown on this site we call the ‘Home Block’. This site is also home to the winery and the fantastic team of winemakers that craft their magic in our wines.
The site was renamed Kahurangi in 1998 and took its’ name from the stunning Kahurangi National Park on our doorstep. Kahurangi is a Maori word with several meanings, two being ‘treasured possession’ and ‘precious jewel’. Our distinctive logo is a stylised reproduction of the Nikau palm, which proliferates in the valleys and West Coast beaches of the Kahurangi National Park. The Nikau palm was a treasured source of food and flax to the indigenous Maori tribes in the upper South Island.
